Feasibility study for a small business: what it is and isn't

A feasibility study answers one question: can this actually be done, and should it be? It sits before the business plan. The plan assumes you are going ahead and works out how; the feasibility study asks whether you should go ahead at all.

For a small business you rarely need the thick formal document the term suggests. You need honest answers to a short list of questions, in writing, before you commit money.

What a feasibility study covers

  • Market feasibility - is there real demand, at a price that works, against the competition already there? (This is the idea-validation question.)
  • Operational feasibility - can you actually deliver it? The suppliers, staff, premises, consents, licences and equipment it would take.
  • Financial feasibility - do the numbers work? What it costs to start and run, what you need to earn, when you break even, and whether that is realistic.

If any one of those three fails, the idea is not feasible in its current form - and that is worth knowing before, not after.

Feasibility study vs business plan vs validation

  • Validation / testing - cheap, fast experiments to see if people will pay. Do this first.
  • Feasibility study - a structured "can and should we?" across market, operations and finance.
  • Business plan - the document you run the business from once you have decided to proceed.

They overlap, and for a small business they often merge into one honest piece of work rather than three separate reports.

When it's worth doing

Do a real feasibility check when the stakes are high: you are about to sign a lease, borrow against your house, leave a job, or buy equipment you cannot easily sell. The bigger and less reversible the commitment, the more a feasibility study earns its keep.

The honest part

A feasibility study is not there to justify a decision you have already made. Done properly, it is willing to conclude "no" - and sometimes that is the most valuable outcome it can produce.

Our idea validation is a feasibility check in practice: we test the market, the operations and the numbers, and tell you where the idea lands, including when the answer is that it does not stack up.

Thinking about your own idea?

Idea validation is the cheapest step to get right first - an honest, evidence-based read on whether it holds up, before you spend real money. If it holds up, your answers carry straight into your business plan.
